Almaty’s Tire Recycling Plant Transforms Waste into Eco-Friendly Products

A tire recycling plant in Almaty is turning old rubber into useful products while cutting down on waste. Opened nearly a year ago, the facility processes discarded tires into rubber crumb and safety mats for playgrounds and sports tracks. The initiative aligns with Kazakhstan’s push for a greener economy.

Entrepreneur Valery Goloukhov launched Altra Tyres, the company behind the Almaty plant, with support from Altra Industrial Motion (now part of Regal Rexnord). The project was inspired by national programmes promoting sustainable development. Similar recycling plants already operate in Uralsk and Astana.

The Almaty facility uses a production line sourced from Novosibirsk, Russia. Managers selected the equipment for its straightforward operation and easy maintenance. Marat Abirov, head of the Almaty division, supervised the plant’s setup and daily operations.

To gather raw materials, the company partners with logistics firms, tire service centers, and even WhatsApp groups for local fitters. Residents increasingly drop off old tires, helping reduce landfill waste. Altra Tyres also issues official recycling certificates, ensuring transparency in the process.

The plant’s rubber granules and safety tiles meet strict environmental standards. Demand for these products remains strong across Kazakhstan, particularly for playgrounds and running tracks.

The Almaty plant continues to expand its collection network and production capacity. By converting waste tires into certified, eco-friendly materials, it supports both local businesses and environmental goals. The model may soon extend to other regions in Kazakhstan.
