Almaty's Sunkar Sports Complex transforms into a vibrant recreational hub
Almaty's Sunkar Sports Complex is undergoing a major transformation to become a key recreational hub. The project includes landslide protection, new sports facilities, and a botanical garden. Work has already started, with some upgrades completed and more planned for the coming years.
The complex was first identified as a high-risk landslide zone in 2016. Despite this, the city's Emergency Situations Department has reported no recent landslides on the mountain. To ensure stability, the revitalisation project includes protective measures, such as reinforcing slopes with native tree species in the new arboretum. However, specific details about the number of tree species have not yet been released as of March 2026.
A special commission of experts has been formed to develop a master plan for the mountain's future. The goal is to turn it into a major tourist attraction. The International Ski Jumping Complex will be repurposed as a recreational area, featuring a new viewing platform at the highest point of the ski jumps—the first of its kind in the city. Renovations are already in progress. One football field has been completed, and a second is planned. The roller-skiing trail will also be restored. Alongside these upgrades, a new botanical garden will be built on the complex's grounds, adding greenery and biodiversity to the area.
The project aims to revitalise the Sunkar Sports Complex with improved safety, sports facilities, and public spaces. Once finished, it will offer residents and visitors a mix of recreation, nature, and scenic views. The city expects the upgrades to boost tourism and local engagement in the area.
