Almaty to Plant Over 380,000 Trees in Coming Year
In the heart of Kazakhstan, Almaty is making significant strides in its greening initiative. The city's ambitious plan, known as the Jasyl Almaty program, was announced by Mayor Bakytzhan Sagintayev on Instagram in 2022, with a goal to plant one million trees over three years.
Under this program, a 65-hectare plot has been identified for the greening drive, where 480 coniferous trees have already been planted. This plot, once fully developed, will become a new attraction and an "oxygen factory" in Almaty, adding to the city's growing urban greenery.
The progress of the greening initiative has not gone unnoticed. The city mayor has personally acknowledged the progress in the Pine Grove of the Alatau District. The initiative involves not just the city administration, but also ordinary citizens, eco-activists, business representatives, construction, and trading companies.
Last year, 135,000 trees were planted in Almaty, and this year, the city has already planted 282,000 trees, which is the five-year norm. This means that by the end of 2022, the area of green spaces per person in Almaty will be 11 sq.m, meeting the norm of 10 sq.m. The greening area per person in Almaty has already increased from 7.7 sq.m to 8.5 sq.m.
Looking ahead, next year, another 380,000 trees are planned to be planted in Almaty. Five new park zones are also set to be created in the city next year, further enhancing its urban greenery.
While the latest updates on the Jasyl Almaty program are not readily available, the initiative remains an ongoing municipal effort to increase green spaces within Almaty. The identified plot, now home to approximately 3,000 trees, is a testament to the city's commitment to a greener future.
As the program continues to progress, Almaty is poised to become a city where nature and urban development coexist harmoniously, providing a healthier and more sustainable living environment for its residents.
