Alexandria Launches 250 Patriotic Gardens for America's 250th Anniversary

Alexandria is preparing to celebrate America's 250th anniversary with a fresh twist on gardening. The Beautification Commission has launched a new initiative to create 250 'patriotic gardens' using native plants in red, white and blue. Residents and businesses are now invited to take part in the Plant for America250 challenge this spring.

The 2026 Alexandria Beautification Awards will feature a dedicated category for patriotic native plantings. Nominations open on April 1, with judges prioritising long-term native displays over temporary seasonal arrangements. Properties that have won an award in the past seven years will not qualify for this round.

Planting can start as early as late March or April, once the risk of freezing weather has passed. The commission encourages even small contributions, such as a pot of red, white, and blue flowers at a business entrance. Participants can submit a pledge to join the challenge, committing to use native species that support local pollinators. The initiative suggests sourcing plants from local nurseries or sales like the Northern Alexandria Native Plant Sale and Nature by Design. While no specific list of recommended species has been provided, the focus remains on native varieties that benefit the environment. The goal is to see 250 new gardens planted across the city by the anniversary.

The Plant for America250 challenge offers a way for the community to mark the nation's 250th birthday while supporting local ecosystems. Gardens planted this spring will not only add colour to neighbourhoods but also provide lasting benefits for pollinators. Winners of the new award category will be announced as part of the 2026 Beautification Awards.
