Alexandria City High School launches search for new principal before 2025–26 term
Alexandria City Public Schools is searching for a new principal to lead Alexandria City High School. The process began this week with a job posting and a community survey for input. The school aims to fill the role before the next academic year starts.
The position became vacant after Alexander Duncan III left at the end of June 2025. He took a job as principal at Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington. His predecessor, Peter Balas, had also moved to Arlington Public Schools in 2023.
The role, previously called executive principal, will now be renamed principal. This change reflects a shift in structure, with the new leader overseeing the high school's four campuses. Campus administrators will also be reclassified as campus principals.
Applications will be reviewed in April, followed by first and second-round interviews. The school system is looking for someone with a master's degree in educational leadership or a related field. Candidates must also hold a teaching licence and have at least five years of experience as a principal or lead administrator. The salary for the position ranges from £120,672 to £180,518.
A community survey opened on Wednesday and will remain available until 23 March. This feedback will help shape the selection process.
The hiring timeline is set to ensure a new principal is in place for the upcoming school year. The school system has not disclosed how many applicants will be considered in the early interview stages. The final decision will follow community input and a structured review process.
