Cashier wages at Aldi: Insight into their remuneration - Aldi cashier salary information

If you've ever set foot in an Aldi store, you've likely noticed the brisk pace at which items zip through the checkout. But do those speedy cashiers earn a penny less than their counterparts at other supermarkets? Unequivocally not! Let's dive into the cashier compensation at everyone's favorite discount store.

The Aldi empire, formed in 1961 by the sons of the founder, Karl and Theo Albrecht, split into two regions: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. The wages vary slightly between the two, with Aldi Süd shelling out a tad more dough. This discrepancy might explain why Aldi Süd is so forthcoming about their wages, whereas Aldi Nord, well, not so much. Aldi Nord strictly adheres to regional collective agreements for retail and pays accordingly, with modest additions known as the "Aldi allowance." The exact details of this allowance — how much and for who — were withheld upon stern's request.

Aldi Nord does promise a minimum hourly wage of 14 euros, effective June 1, 2022. Given a typical 37.5-hour workweek, that translates to a base monthly salary of 2,275 euros. Plus, employees can expect vacation and Christmas bonuses to kick in.

Given the slightly higher cost of living in southern Germany, it's no surprise that Aldi Süd pays its employees a bit more. Minimum wage starts at 15 euros an hour, touching cashier and shelf-stacker pockets. For the weary, long-suffering cashier, salaries coast up to 19.59 euros per hour, resulting in monthly incomes of 2,440-3,180 euros for 37.5 hours. Vacation and Christmas bonuses, as well as regional allowances in certain areas, are also part of the package.

Trained sales assistants, a step up from cashiers and shelf-stackers, can look forward to average monthly salaries of 2,590 euros in large retail companies. Aldi Süd tops this figure with paychecks ranging from 2,660-3,460 euros per month, well above the national average. The stubborn folks at Aldi Süd remained tight-lipped when questioned about Christmas and vacation money.

Apprentices in the sales assistant program earn significantly less, with Aldi Süd offering 1,250 euros, 1,350 euros, and 1,500 euros each year for the first three years. This is more than Aldi Nord, where trainees receive 1,160 euros in the first year and 1,430 euros in the third year. It's important to note that all figures provided here are gross wages, tax and social security contributions notwithstanding.

In addition to full-time jobs, part-time positions are quite common in retail, especially for women managing childcare responsibilities. Scanning the job listings for Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, you'll notice a plethora of part-time listings. Cashiers clocking in for 20 hours a week at Aldi Süd start with a gross monthly wage of 1,300 euros.
