Google Photos Introduces New AI-Powered Creative Features
Google Photos, a popular platform with a global user base, continues to innovate, introducing a new suite of AI-driven creative tools. The latest addition is the Remix feature, which allows users to transform their photos into various artistic styles such as anime, 3D animation, comic, and sketches.
The Remix feature, powered by Google's Imagen AI model, is currently rolling out in the United States on Android and iOS devices over the next few weeks. To ensure transparency, all AI-generated content will include a SynthID digital watermark.
Looking ahead, Google plans to expand and refine these AI-driven creative tools within a new "Create" tab expected to launch in August 2025 in the U.S. This tab will consolidate all creative features, including Remix and photo-to-video, and Google intends to introduce new tools and experiments over time, alongside improvements to existing functionalities based on user feedback. Users will be able to save AI-generated clips, regenerate outputs if unsatisfied, and provide feedback via thumbs-up or thumbs-down icons to help improve accuracy.
Google emphasizes that Remix and related features remain experimental and subject to improvement based on user input. The company exercises caution by severely limiting the scope of what can be created with these new tools and displaying warnings before use, along with a link to its GenAI prohibited use policy.
While the Remix feature limits creativity by forcing users to pick from a small menu of pre-selected styles, it is aimed at providing a fun and engaging way to share moments in new ways, similar to viral "Ghliblified" images and action figure pictures on social media.
It's important to note that unlike powerful tools like ChatGPT or Midjourney, Google Photos' Remix feature does not currently offer the ability to fine-tune style intensity or selective editing. However, ongoing refinements are expected within the Create tab rollout.
Google Photos' new features are currently only available in the US, potentially frustrating international users who may have to wait a considerable amount of time to access them. To make its generative tools easier to find, Google has introduced a new "Create" tab, which can be accessed by clicking an icon at the bottom of the app on both Android and iOS devices.
Unlike the newer Veo3 video AI model used by Gemini, Google Photos employs the older Veo 2 model, which cannot generate audio, one of the standout features of Veo 3.
