Lake Constance Cycle Route: A Continuing Success Story

The Lake Constance Cycle Route, a flagship of European cycling tourism, is a testament to the power of cooperation between municipalities and international partners. This iconic path, connecting Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, is undergoing continuous improvements to make it more attractive and safe for cyclists.

The need for these enhancements is evident, as the cycle route requires separation from motor vehicle traffic, removal of bottlenecks, better signposting, and measures for more traffic safety. These improvements are not just cosmetic, but essential for the safety and enjoyment of cyclists using the route.

The process for these changes was initiated by the Lake Constance Cycle Path office, supported by the Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. A Quality Pact has been signed by municipalities on the Lake Constance Cycle Path, districts of Bodenseekreis and Konstanz, government districts of Tübingen and Freiburg, to implement these improvements in a coordinated manner.

This coordinated approach can serve as a model for the quality management of other national long-distance cycle routes. The Lake Constance Cycle Path is part of the RadNETZ BW and forms the backbone of cycling around Lake Constance.

The business office of the Lake Constance Cycle Route will coordinate this quality management and is located at the International Lake Constance Tourism GmbH. The IBK continues to support the joint quality development of the cycle route today.

The Lake Constance Cycle Route is one of the most popular long-distance cycling routes in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, established in 1983 by the International Lake Constance Conference (IBK). In a resolution passed in June 2025, the countries and cantons around Lake Constance committed to a coordinated further development of the cycle route.

The route offers citizens quick, direct daily connections and provides tourists with a varied cycling trip along the lake. The Mayor of the city of Meersburg, Robert Scherer, stated that the Lake Constance Cycle Path is one of the most important tourist and cultural axes in the region, contributing significantly to regional value creation.

Government officials, such as Dominik Diezi from the canton of Thurgau, stress the importance of developing the cycle path sustainably. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann emphasized the need for demand-oriented improvements to maintain and further strengthen the attractiveness of the cycle path.

For further information, the Ministry of Transport can be contacted via email in their Press Office or through a Contact Form on their website. Nina Hanstein, Managing Director of the International Lake Constance Tourism GmbH, emphasized the international tourist significance of the Lake Constance Cycle Route for the region.

With these commitments to quality development coordinated across municipalities and countries, an important step has been taken to further unite the region. The Lake Constance Cycle Path remains a shining example of what can be achieved through cooperation and a shared vision for sustainable, enjoyable, and safe cycling.
