The Swing Bridge of Rendsburg has been transformed into a Fish Shop - Aged Rendsburger float now serves as fish bait.
The old Rendsburg Swing Bridge, a historic railway bridge over the Kiel Canal in Germany, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation. Martin Sick, the project manager of the renewable energy sector, has expressed his determination to create a terrace and a stage on the iconic bridge, turning it into a unique fish restaurant.
Built in 1913, the bridge has a rich history. In 2016, it collided with a ship, resulting in two injuries, one of them serious. The exact ship involved in the disaster remains undisclosed. The collision left visible deformations on the steel frame of the nearly 30-ton bridge, a testament to the past incident. Despite the damages, the bridge was replaced and now stands on the North Sea Canal.
Martin Sick, the initiator and entrepreneur of the project, has purchased the property where the old bridge stands and has only removed the damaged parts. He expects almost six figures to be invested in the conversion of the bridge into a fish restaurant. The restaurant is expected to open this weekend, following a trial run last weekend.
The location of the restaurant is considered significant for the city, offering a blend of history and uniqueness. The German Press Agency is involved in reporting on the project, documenting the transformation of this engineering landmark into a dining destination.
The project team is currently in the process of learning and preparing for operation, with plans to start the upcoming season from spring 2026. Martin Sick is open to discussions with regional individuals for potential tenancy of the restaurant, inviting the community to be a part of this unique venture.
The Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation concluded that negligence on both the bridge operator and the ship's bridge of the freighter "Evert Prahm" led to the collision. However, the focus now shifts to the future of the old Rendsburg Swing Bridge, as it prepares to welcome diners and guests to its new role as a fish restaurant.
