Drill Masters: Lidl's Budget-Friendly Cordless Hammer Drill Takes the Crown

Affordable Battery-Powered Drills Demonstrate Effectiveness in Performance Test

Kickback on Costs, Not QualityDIY enthusiasts, listen up! The latest test by Stiftung Warentest proves that you don't have to empty your wallet to get a top-performing cordless hammer drill. In their evaluation of 16 current models, 13 of which sport a hammer function, they found that high price tags don't always guarantee high quality[1][2].

The Big ShowdownSo, who took the crown? It's none other than the budget-friendly Parkside 20 V PSBSAP 20-Li C3 from everyone's favorite discounter, Lidl. Priced at around 50 euros, this drill not only outshines some models costing over 200 euros from premium brands like Bosch and Makita[1][2], but it also impressed testers with its functions, handling, and durability, earning an overall rating of 1.9[3].

The Einhell Professional TP-CD 18/70 Li-i BL - Solo, with a price of 105 euros and an overall rating of 1.8, holds the top spot[3]. While it's the overall winner, the Parkside gives it a run for its money, and it's even the better hammer drill[3]. However, the Parkside is currently sold out in Lidl's online shop[3].

Affordable PowerhousesIf the Parkside is out of stock, the number 1 is also the price-performance winner[3]. The other good devices are usually more expensive and weaker. The exception is the Hikoki DV18DDW4Z, which averages just under 100 euros and received a quality rating of 2.4[3]. But it scored poorly as a hammer drill[3]. So, if budget's your concern, stick with Lidl.

Beware the MakitaDHP489ZOnly one device with a hammer mechanism received a poor rating: the MakitaDHP489Z, which costs around 175 euros. Testers found that it stops too late when in use, potentially leading to injuries[3].

No Hammer? No ProblemIf you don't need a hammer function, the Lux-Tools 1PowerSystem A-BS-20 B Solo from DIY store Obi is your best bet. Priced at just 50 euros, it has an overall rating of 1.9[3], and the only downside is that it's not as highly rated by testers as the Parkside[3].

Community members might consider investing in the budget-friendly Parkside 20 V PSBSAP 20-Li C3 for their home-and-garden projects, as it outperforms more expensive gadgets in the home-and-garden lifestyle category, like the Lux-Tools 1PowerSystem A-BS-20 B Solo or high-end models from brands like Bosch and Makita. However, note that the Parkside may be temporarily out of stock. When choosing a cordless hammer drill, it's essential to consider factors like quality, performance, and safety, such as avoiding devices with poor ratings like the MakitaDHP489Z, which has been criticized for stopping too late during use.
