In recent times, studies conducted by Cancer Research have highlighted a concerning trend - e-cigarette marketing is more likely to influence young people, particularly teenagers and young adults. This influence is largely attributed to the design and packaging of vape products.

E-cigarettes, often referred to as vaping, are devices that simulate tobacco smoking and contain flavored nicotine. The allure of these products extends beyond their function, with their packaging playing a significant role in attracting young consumers.

Young adults, including those between 18 to 24 in Australia, are increasingly adopting e-cigarettes as a recreational habit. According to recent statistics, about 20% of this age group have used a vaping device or e-cigarette at least once.

In the UK, the number of 11- to 17-year-olds using e-cigarettes has seen a significant increase. In 2022, 7% of this age group were found to be using e-cigarettes, up from 3.3% the year before.

The appeal of vape products lies in their packaging. Companies have used packaging to market e-cigarettes to young adults, using cultural references that teenagers relate to. Vape packaging often references punk and hipster themes, with names like Bloody Mary and logo designs resembling tattoos and graffiti. Vape products are designed to be appealing with bright colors, edgy designs, and sweet flavors.

However, this allure comes with risks. Nicotine, a key component of e-cigarettes, carries risks specific to teenagers and should not be used by youth or non-smokers. Teenagers are susceptible to peer influence and misleading marketing on the health effects of vaping.

In an effort to combat this, there is a demand for plain packaging for e-cigarettes to protect the health of young people. Plain packaging would make e-cigarette products less appealing to potential customers, thereby potentially reducing their appeal to young people.

Plain packaging has already hampered sales efforts used by vape companies. Removing packaging may stop more people from taking up vaping and help those trying to desist from it. Additionally, plain packaging increases awareness of the health risks of vaping and affects smokers more than branded packs.

Public health efforts to counteract youth vaping are increasingly focusing on regulating packaging and marketing practices alongside tailored awareness campaigns. For instance, generating youth-codesigned health messaging can be effective against the appeal of vape packaging by making awareness campaigns resonate better with young audiences.
