Actor and producer Evie McGee Colbert, partner of Stephen Colbert, played a crucial role in ensuring The Late Show remained operational during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite not being a frequent viewer herself.

In a world where disagreements over kitchenware can make or break a relationship, Stephen Colbert's spouse, Evelyn "Evie" McGee Colbert, seems to be holding her own against the talk show host's culinary ambitions. The pair's latest venture, a cookbook titled Does This Taste Funny? Recipes Our Family Loves, does indeed look like a manual for maintaining romantic harmony - or maybe a guidebook for couples therapy, given Bon Appétit's take on it.

In an intimate chat with Bon Appétit, Evie, 61, shed light on her journey from a "recovering insecure cook" to co-authoring a cookbook with her husband of 31 years. The book, released towards the end of last year, features stories and recipes that range from hilarious kitchen mishaps to family favorites. One such tale is the infamous "spoon story," where Evie nearly ruined a non-stick pan with a metal spatula, much to Stephen's dismay.

So, who is the woman behind the scenes, raising three children, Madeleine, Peter, and John, with Stephen Colbert?

A Multifaceted Career

Evie graduated from the University of Virginia and Circle in the Square Theatre School, New York, and briefly worked her way through the acting industry. She later transitioned to roles in development for the Drama League of New York and the Remains Theatre of Chicago. Today, she is a founding member of New Jersey's Montclair Film Festival and serves as its board's president. Evie has also graced the screen in projects like "Strangers with Candy" (1999) and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (2013). On the corporate front, she is a board member of Charleston's International African American Museum, South Carolina, and the vice-president of Spartina Productions, a company founded by her husband, where she also serves as an independent producer.

A Serendipitous Meeting

As the story goes, the Colberts' families were acquainted, often socializing together. At some point, they even attended the same fraternity party. However, it was during Charleston's Spoleto Festival that their paths crossed in a more personal way. Stephen was captivated by Evie's presence in a theatre lobby, while Evie found him endearing for his affectionate bond with his mother. They initially connected at the after-party for the Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg musical-theatre piece "Hydrogen Jukebox" and tied the knot in 1993.

  1. Evie's career extends beyond cooking and the home-and-garden sphere; she is a founding member of the Montclair Film Festival, a board member of Charleston's International African American Museum, and an independent producer at Spartina Productions, demonstrating her multifaceted career.
  2. Despite their lively debates over kitchenware and Stephen's culinary ambitions, their relationship, strengthened by shared laughter and love, transcends food-and-drink affairs and also encompasses aspects of their personal lives and relationships.
