Reimagined Playground Embraces Historical Tradition of the "Turngarten"

In a passionate reopening ceremony, Mattis Ricken, head of the Green Planning department at the Garden Office, announced the revamped playground that draws inspiration from the area's 200-year-old sports and movement traditions. The playground, now dubbed "Turngarten," features a design that ties into the history of the courtyard and incorporates the local Bergisch Lion motif.

Nestled in lush greenery, the playground boasts a myriad of play stations, with the main focus being a large obstacle course complete with climbing elements, balancing features, tube slides, and Hula-Hoop-like hoops to crawl through. Adjacent to the main play area, a swing promenade caters to children of varying abilities and age groups, while a shaded toddler zone offers a sandplay area, small playhouses, balancing bars, and a slide.

Other enhancements to the playground include an expanded water mat installation, a fitness area with exercise equipment, table tennis tables, and a stepped platform transformed into a winner's podium. The new design ensures barrier-free accessibility and encourages inclusive play by introducing features like wheelchair-accessible bridges, tactile elements, and a wheelchair-friendly trampoline.

While specific details about the "Turngarten" playground are hard to find, the revamped playground's design follows the principles of promoting physical activity, fostering a sense of community, and blending with the environment. The Bergisch Lion motif, a historical heraldic symbol from the Bergisches Land region, serves as a symbol of regional identity, community pride, and design inspiration.

Inclusive play features are integral to the design, promoting physical accessibility with wheelchair-accessible pathways and ground-level play structures. Sensory experiences are catered to by incorporating textured panels, interactive elements, and shaded areas, ensuring an enjoyable visit for children with various abilities. The sloped surfaces and varied elevation contribute to the playground's topography, providing challenges and opportunities for children of different levels of mobility and strength.

Clear signage incorporating the Bergisch Lion motif serves to guide visitors, reinforcing the playground's community connection and regional pride. A delightful blend of history, fun, and accessibility, the revamped "Turngarten" playground promises to become a cherished local landmark for generations to come.
