Aachen’s Elisengarten blooms with trainee-led replanting project this autumn

Aachen’s city centre is getting a fresh burst of colors this autumn. Trainees from the city nursery are leading a replanting project at the Elisengarten. The project gives trainees hands-on experience in project management of public spaces. Under the supervision of master gardeners Laia Kirn and Filmon Brhane, participants from all training years take turns working on site. Each week, different groups contribute to the planting. Around 55,000 plants have been grown at the city nursery for this season’s efforts. These are being distributed across Aachen, including the city centre, municipal cemeteries, and outer districts. The Elisengarten’s replanting is part of a wider push to refresh green areas before winter. The upper entrance bed’s redesign aims to create a hardy, visually striking color palette. Alpine violets and cyclamen will add seasonal color, while grasses and perennials ensure year-round structure. Callunas, or heather, will provide texture and contrast. The project not only enhances the Elisengarten but also builds practical skills for future gardeners. Trainees gain responsibility in a busy urban setting, preparing them for careers in horticulture. The new planting will be visible to visitors in the coming weeks as the plants establish themselves.
