Revel in the Elegance of St. Catherine's Church: A 800-Year-Old Masterpiece Above the Rhine
Venerated Rhine-side church commemorates landmark anniversary - A unique church, situated on the Rhine River, commemorates its anniversary.
Chills, history, and a dash of the gothic, St. Catherine's Church in Oppenheim, Rhinhessen offers a captivating blend. Perched above the Rhine, this house of worship commands attention, serving as an alluring leisure destination that screams 'Check me out!' as it turns 800 years this year!
Just a stone's throw away lies the Michael's Chapel, complete with the Bone House. Here, some 20,000 souls from Oppenheim's old days between 1400 and 1750 have found their final resting place. Back then, it was quite common to make room for new burials on the small cemetery by shuffling the bones of the deceased from earlier times.
On Pentecost Monday, an Ecumenical Festival Service will be held to honor the church's 800th birthday and the city's 800 years of rights. Although the exact start date of the church’s construction remains unclear, art historian Tina Schöbel speculates it was around the beginning of the 13th century. The Gothic church continues to astound with its distinctive architecture and stunning facade. Henriette Crüwell, Rheinhessen's Protestant Bishop, adds that the church serves as a visible symbol of enduring faith and European architecture.
A peek into the church's early phase reveals remnants in the west towers, with subsequent renovations and additions giving the structure its widely recognized Gothic charm. Despite being a worthy representation of Gothic architecture, there's one peculiarity that escapes the eye: the size of the bread and its price immortalized as an inscription on a wall back in 1317.
This church's unique beauty extends to its Oppenheim Roses - elaborate, intricate traceried windows gracing its south facade. Known throughout the land, these roses cement the church’s reputation as a remarkable piece of medieval architecture. The church became Protestant in the second half of the 16th century and saw several damages throughout history. After extensive restorations in the 19th century and 1930s, the church was thoughtfully preserved and rediscovered as a Gothic masterpiece[1].
