A Swiss Chalet Redefines Alpine Living with Timeless Elegance and Tradition

A new chalet in Switzerland’s Upper Engadin has redefined alpine living with a mix of tradition and modern elegance. Designed by Humbert & Poyet, the home was created as a year-round family residence rather than just a holiday escape. Its striking blend of rustic charm and urban sophistication sets it apart in the region.

The project marks the first in the Engadin for the architecture studio. The clients, who had previously worked with multiple architects, selected Humbert & Poyet for their final mountain retreat. Their vision was clear: a home that balanced alpine serenity with refined, high-end design.

The chalet’s exterior and interior draw from traditional Swiss architecture, but with a contemporary edge. Locally sourced pine and oak dominate the spaces, reinforcing a connection to the surrounding landscape. A standout feature is the solid oak spiral staircase, which reinterprets classic chalet elements in a bold, modern way. Art Deco touches add an extra layer of elegance, lifting the design beyond typical mountain lodges. Large windows frame the dramatic mountain scenery, turning the views into the home’s focal point. The owners deliberately left the walls bare, letting nature take centre stage as the ultimate artwork.

The completed chalet stands as a seamless fusion of old and new, blending alpine heritage with sleek sophistication. Its thoughtful design ensures it functions as a permanent family home, not just a seasonal retreat. The result is a space where mountain tranquillity meets timeless elegance.
