A Rüsselsheim pub’s vacant lot blooms into an award-winning green oasis
A vacant lot next to the Rind pub on Mainstraße in Rüsselsheim has been transformed into a flourishing show garden. Funded by the state’s Future Inner City programme, the space now features seating, flower beds, and sustainable materials—all repurposed from the site itself. This year, the garden bloomed for the first time, creating a small green oasis in the city centre.
The transformation began in late 2024 as part of the Urban Renewal Weisenauer Straße project. Instead of importing new materials, designers used what was already available, crafting benches, a standing table, and flower borders from existing resources. The effort quickly gained recognition, winning an award in the Municipal Green Spaces category of the Blossoming Gardens photo competition. Judges highlighted its role in boosting biodiversity and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The show garden now stands as a practical example of sustainable urban greening. Its success has encouraged further community projects, with local authorities providing ongoing guidance and resources. The space remains open to the public, offering a quiet retreat and inspiration for future green initiatives in the area.
