A Madrid Apartment’s Radical Transformation on a Tight Budget
A once cramped and dim apartment near Madrid’s Parque del Retiro has been transformed into a bright, modern space. The young team at Plantea Estudio led the renovation, working within a tight budget to reimagine the home. Their approach focused on enhancing the existing structure rather than hiding it.
The original layout split the apartment into small, enclosed rooms that felt dark and unwelcoming. The design team responded by opening up the space and relocating the kitchen to make it a central feature. They kept the raw concrete walls exposed, pairing them with smooth microcement floors and sleek terrazzo details.
A ventilation shaft, once an eyesore, was clad in mirrors to bounce light around the living area and create the illusion of more space. Warmth came from walnut wood, used in the kitchen cabinetry and custom furniture. The studio even crafted side tables from leftover terrazzo pieces and solid walnut, adding unique touches without overspending.
The renovation turned a dated, compartmentalised flat into an airy, functional home. Mirrors, natural wood, and industrial materials now define the space, blending practicality with style. The project proves that thoughtful design can refresh a property—even on a limited budget.
