A Lake Minnetonka Heirloom Cottage Blends Timeless Charm with Modern Living
A newly designed second home on Lake Minnetonka offers a timeless, lived-in charm. The property, crafted by Grace Hill Design, was built to feel like an heirloom cottage—distinct from the owners' primary residence. Every detail reflects a focus on comfort, connection, and the surrounding lake landscape.
The home's design began with a challenge: a narrow, sloping lot overlooking the lake. Instead of a limitation, the steep terrain became an opportunity. Terraced levels, retaining walls, and multi-level patios were introduced to maximise views, improve accessibility, and create separate zones for relaxation, entertaining, and water access.
Inside, the floor plan prioritises flexibility and togetherness. A dedicated bunkroom and office space cater to both family stays and remote work. Floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors dissolve the line between indoors and outdoors, reinforcing the lakefront lifestyle. The primary bedroom, with its arched ceiling and built-in sky-blue cabinetry, adds a tranquil retreat. Kristi Patterson, Principal Designer at Grace Hill, chose pine floors to enhance the home's warm, well-worn character. The firm, now focusing solely on full home projects after 15 years in retail, believes in shaping spaces around how people live. Even the garage, positioned across from the main house, transforms the tight lot into an extra entertaining area.
The Lake Minnetonka home now stands as a carefully crafted retreat, blending practicality with nostalgic charm. Its terraced outdoor spaces, thoughtful interiors, and emphasis on gathering reflect the owners' desire for a second home that feels both personal and timeless. Grace Hill Design's approach ensures the property adapts seamlessly to everyday life and lakeside leisure.
