A hiker's year of triumphs and disappointments on Europe's most stunning trails
A year-long journey across Europe and Italy led one hiker to explore trails in every country they visited. From steep climbs to serene lakes, each route offered something unique. Some paths exceeded expectations, while others fell short due to crowds or overhyped reputations.
Italy's Lago di Sorapis trail stood out as a favourite. The technically challenging route demanded concentration but rewarded hikers with breathtaking views. Another highlight in Italy, the Dolomites' Tre Cime di Lavaredo, disappointed with its overcrowded paths and underwhelming experience.
In Austria, the Leutasch trail from Rotmoosalm to Wettersteinhütte charmed with its peaceful landscapes. Yet the Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves, though impressive, suffered from excessive visitor numbers. Meanwhile, Slovenia's Kozjak Waterfall left a lasting impression with its vivid emerald waters, a spot the hiker would eagerly return to.
France's Hérisson Waterfalls trail proved both steep and stunning. Seven cascades lined the route, making the effort worthwhile. Despite mixed encounters, the traveller enjoyed every hike, each one adding to the adventure.
The journey covered diverse terrains, from icy caves to alpine lakes. Some trails impressed with their beauty, while others struggled with popularity. Each hike, however, contributed to a year of unforgettable outdoor experiences in Italy and beyond.
