A Cramped London Home Gets a Stunning, Space-Maximizing Makeover
A small terraced house in South West London has been transformed by Sketch Architects into a bright, spacious family home. The renovation focused on maximising space and improving daily life for the residents.
The project began with a clear goal: to make the most of the limited space in the narrow property. The architects removed internal walls, exposing steel supports to create open sight lines from the front to the back of the house.
A key change involved lowering the kitchen floor at the rear. This adjustment improved the connection to the garden and increased visibility into the newly developed basement. The basement itself was turned into a functional, playful area for the family.
At the heart of the home, a double-height space was introduced. The stairs were repositioned, and a glass roof was installed at the rear, flooding the area with natural light. The front reception room was restored to its original size but now features a full-height glass wall overlooking the central void.
To further enhance the living experience, a large rear extension was added. It includes a spacious kitchen and a wide glass door that opens directly into the garden. Throughout the house, innovative storage solutions were built in to keep the space uncluttered and practical.
The refurbishment has created a home that feels far larger than its footprint suggests. Open sight lines, improved light, and flexible spaces now make the house more comfortable and adaptable for the family's needs. The design choices ensure every area serves a practical purpose while maintaining a sense of openness.
