A 1907 California Home Reborn With Global Travel Inspirations
A historic San Francisco home built in 1907 has been carefully remodeled to blend natural beauty with personal travel influences. The 10,000-square-foot property now reflects a light, uplifting Californian style while preserving its original layout.
SkB Architects led the renovation, keeping all internal walls intact to maintain the home's intimate feel. The largest space is the living room, which combines a sitting area, dining table, and a grand home bar. Nearby, a well-proportioned kitchen features a large island, while a garden room beside it includes a dedicated coffee bar station.
The design embraces wood in different styles across the main house and a self-contained guest cottage. This cottage offers its own kitchen, living area, and dining space. Each room draws inspiration from the client's travels, incorporating elements from Bali, Thailand, and California to create an eclectic yet cohesive atmosphere.
The remodel aimed to restore warmth and character, moving away from previous modern updates that felt soulless. Natural materials and a connection to the outdoors play a key role, reflecting the home's Californian roots.
The renovation has transformed the century-old property into a space that balances history with personal storytelling. The use of wood, travel-inspired details, and thoughtful layout ensures the home feels both timeless and distinctly modern. Guests and residents alike now experience a bright, welcoming environment tailored to its owners' tastes.
