A 1900s Tailor's Cottage Becomes a Beloved Family Retreat in New York
A century-old cottage in Bedford, New York, has been transformed into a family retreat while keeping its historic charm. Originally built as a tailor's workshop in the early 1900s, the 390-square-foot structure now blends rustic simplicity with modern comforts. Beatrice Smith, a former prop stylist, led the renovation with care, ensuring the space remained true to its past.
The cottage was relocated to a seven-acre property and repurposed as a guesthouse. Despite its small size, the family uses it daily, especially for their young daughter, who calls it her special place. The original wooden beams, light fixtures, fireplace mantel, and kitchen cabinets were all preserved during the update.
To improve functionality, a bathroom was added—something the main house lacks. The family now uses the cottage for their daughter's baths, making it a central part of their routine. The exterior still features its historic all-white wood siding and single-pane windows, though storm windows were installed for better energy efficiency.
Inside, the design balances old and new. Muted linen fabrics, untreated wood, and antiques create a warm, lived-in feel. The kitchen, however, offers a subtle modern touch with deep violet Delft tiles. Smith took inspiration from the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, weaving in Americana elements without making the space feel like a display.
The cottage now serves as both a practical extension of the family home and a peaceful retreat. Its thoughtful renovation ensures it remains a functional yet historically rich space. For the family's young daughter, it's more than just a guesthouse—it's a cherished part of daily life.
