70+ volunteers transform Halle's Galgenberg park in massive spring cleanup

Halle's Galgenberg park has received a thorough spring clean thanks to over 70 volunteers from Stadtwerke Halle. The annual effort targeted winter's leftover waste, including old carpets, furniture, and even unusual items like clothing. Organisers say the cleanup went beyond routine maintenance to refresh the popular recreational area. The spring clean focused on removing bulky waste left behind after winter. Volunteers collected discarded bicycles, shopping trolleys, and furniture scattered across Galgenberg. Among the odd finds were pieces of clothing, including a bra.

Hallesche Wasser und Stadtwirtschaft GmbH (HWS) led the initiative, though its usual duties cover street and path cleaning rather than green spaces. Peter Günther, HWS managing director, noted that this effort exceeded daily operations. The company also handles tasks like emptying public bins, winter road maintenance, and disposing of dog waste and Christmas trees.

Residents can still get involved in future cleanups or learn how to dispose of bulky waste properly. Details are available on the HWS website or via the Mein HALLE Zuhause app. The mobile cleaning unit also visits homes once a year to wash out waste and organic bins.

Galgenberg, a well-known spot for concerts, playgrounds, and a skate park, benefits from such efforts. Stadtwerke Halle, the municipal utility behind the event, also promotes careers in environmental protection and waste management. The cleanup has left Galgenberg clearer of winter debris, improving the area for visitors. Residents can continue supporting such efforts through HWS's resources or by joining future volunteer drives. The initiative highlights ongoing collaboration between the city and its utility services to maintain public spaces.
