500 trees planted in Germany’s Ölper Forest to combat climate damage
Employees from BS Energy Group, Veolia Environmental Services, and the German Forest Protection Association recently came together to plant 500 trees in the Ölper Forest. The event, supported by the Veolia Foundation, aimed to restore the damaged area and celebrate the foundation's 25th anniversary.
The reforestation project was necessary due to severe damage caused by climate change, larch bark beetle, and ash dieback disease. Silver firs were chosen to replace the cleared dead and diseased trees. To protect the saplings from roe deer browsing, sheepskin strips were used.
The Veolia Foundation, which backs nonprofit projects in circular economy, energy efficiency, and resource conservation, financed the initiative. The 'Stiftung Braunschweigische Landschaft' specifically supported the local project in Braunschweig. Veolia employees also contributed through the Veolia Cares program, which allows them to take one paid day off per year for volunteer work.
In total, the Veolia Foundation's Tree-Planting Fund plans to finance the planting of 2,025 trees across five locations in Germany this year, with the Ölper Forest initiative marking the first of these projects. The foundation continues to support environmental conservation and sustainability efforts nationwide.
