36 Daycare Centers Win 'Good Healthy Daycare' Award in North Rhine-Westphalia

The 'Good Healthy Daycare' award for 2021/2022 was presented in Wuppertal, honouring 36 outstanding facilities across North Rhine-Westphalia. The prize recognises daycare centres that go above and beyond in ensuring the safety and well-being of children and staff. A total of €173,500 was distributed among the winners, with each receiving €3,000 plus an extra €500 per care group.

The award is organised by the Accident Insurance Fund of North Rhine-Westphalia (Unfallkasse NRW) together with the Professional Association for Health Services and Welfare (BGW). All eligible daycare centres in the region—those insured with either Unfallkasse NRW or BGW—could apply. Out of 111 registrations, 36 facilities were selected after a three-step process: initial application, self-assessment against quality standards, and an on-site evaluation.

One of the top winners was Böckerhof Municipal Daycare Center in Solingen. It received €6,500 for its innovative approach, including varied physical activity programmes and a focus on fresh, seasonal meals sourced from local producers. The award aims to promote long-term improvements in health and safety, as highlighted by Gabriele Pappai, Managing Director of Unfallkasse NRW. She emphasised that integrating these practices into daily routines raises overall quality in childcare. Jörg Schudmann, CEO of BGW, noted that the prize also makes working in daycare centres more appealing. By recognising their efforts, the award supports both employees and children. The initiative operates under the patronage of Josefine Paul, the state minister responsible for children, youth, and family affairs.

The winning daycare centres will use the funds for projects that further improve safety and health conditions. These may include new equipment, training initiatives, or wellness programmes for staff and children. The award continues to encourage high standards in early years education across North Rhine-Westphalia.
