2024 Contenders for RIBA's Annual Architectural Accolade Announced
Celebrating the pinnacle of residential design, the 2024 RIBA House of the Year award shortlist showcases an eclectic mix of six unique architectural creations that span rural Wales, the Cornish coast, and the South East of England.
Curated by RIBA, this annual accolade honors the finest contemporary residences and this year's contenders exude a diverse range of possibilities. From harmony in tight urban spaces to rural retreats, each dwelling reflects a spectrum of factors driving modern-day housing: sustainable construction, intergenerational living, and sensitive restoration.
"These six homes demonstrate the limitless potential of residential architecture," asserts Je Ahn, the jury chair. "Each creation encapsulates a clever balance of adaptability, sustainability, and innovation."
"These architectural jewels evidence a shared ambition among architects and clients to address the challenges posed by contemporary living while ensuring a high-quality, people-focused end product," adds Muyiwa Oki, RIBA president.

Contenders Battling for the Crown
- Farmworker's House - Cornwall Nestled on the north Cornish coast, Hugh Strange Architects have combined domestic and agricultural typologies to create an unassuming yet powerful presence. Crafted with ancient monolithic clay blocks and sturdy masonry walls, this modest yet robust abode offers sanctuary from the elements.
- Peckham House - London A creative self-build project by Tom Surman and Percy Weston of Surman Weston, this home exemplifies clever adaptability for a modest footprint. A hit-and-miss brick facade and stunning rooftop winter garden allow this London dwelling to standout amidst its urban surroundings, offering tranquility and privacy in unexpected ways.
- Eavesdrop - Sussex Tom Dowdall Architects have designed a graceful retirement abode inspired by nature and sustainable living. Featuring level thresholds for easy accessibility, a central courtyard, and simple construction, this Sussex residence invites its residents to live harmoniously with their environment.
- The Hall - Kent A thoroughly restored and renovated Grade II listed 16th-century home harmoniously adorns the Kent Downs landscape. The project's extension includes a pool, pool house, tennis court, stable block, and a new lake, resulting in an elegant revitalization of this historic property that will cater to future generations.
- Plas Hendy Stable Block - Monmouthshire This artsy and accessible family dwelling previously served as an Arts & Crafts stable block. Studio Brassica Architects meticulously preserved the building's heritage and integrated ecological values, earning a place on the shortlist for its thoughtful balance between tradition and sustainability.
- Six Columns - London Winner of the 2024 RIBA House of the Year, 31/44 Architects' creation combines intelligent design sensibilities, adaptability, and future-readiness.
